The German-Canadian Congress meets on the ancestral lands of the Anishinaabeg, Cree, Oji-Cree, Dakota, and Dene Peoples, and on the homeland of the Metis Nation. We respect the Treaties that were made on these territories, we acknowledge the harms and mistakes of the past, and we dedicate ourselves to move forward in partnership with Indigenous communities in a spirit of reconciliation and collaboration.

What I Have Learned as an Expat

Several months ago, GCC board member Lars Richter, who teaches German at the University of Manitoba, asked me to talk in his summer course “Discovering German Life and Culture” about what it means to me to be part of the German and German-speaking community in Winnipeg. The preparations for the class took me on an unexpected journey of discovery in which I learned three things about myself that I had not previously seen in this way.


First of all, I realized how important my German heritage is to me. This wasn’t always the case. When I went to the US in 1996, I wanted to adapt to my new surroundings. I didn’t really want to speak German. On the one hand, there was hardly anyone there with whom I could speak German. On the other hand, I wanted to learn the English language better.
